Prof. Dr. Javier Aizpurua
Donostia International Physics Center
Prof. Dr. Javier Aizpurua is a leading expert in nanophotonics and quantum plasmonics. He currently serves as the Scientific Director of BasQ – the Basque Quantum Strategy – at the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) in San Sebastián, Spain. He is also an Ikerbasque Research Professor at DIPC and a Distinguished Researcher at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).
Prof. Aizpurua leads the Theory of Nanophotonics Group, focusing on the optical response of nanoscale systems. His research encompasses metallic nanoantennas, quantum plasmonics, acousto-plasmonics, dielectric nanoantennas, field-enhanced spectroscopy and microscopy, near-field microscopy, plasmon excitation by fast electron probes, photon emission in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) configurations, and the optical properties of semiconductor quantum dots.
He earned his Ph.D. at the University of the Basque Country, specializing in the theory of plasmon excitation by fast electron beams. He has held research positions at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States.
Prof. Aizpurua has been recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate and received the Euskadi Research Award in 2022 for his contributions to nanophotonics.
